What distance leaves unchanged.
We do not look at a pen the way we look at a bullet. We know what each can do. Yet their outlines are close enough for a few details to change what we see. The shapes are similar; the actions they suggest carry a very different weight.
We move closer to be sure of what we are seeing. But we have to change our minds, then change them again. Looking ever more closely, we eventually lose the outlines we needed to make sense of the whole.
The white was there all along. It accompanied every shape and every purpose we imagined for it. In the last panel, it fills the view on its own. CONSTANCE rests on something simple: what kept changing its name had never changed its colour.
