Holding his gaze.
On the street, we wouldn’t stare at a stranger for so long. In front of a portrait, we allow ourselves to: we move closer, we look, without having to explain our curiosity. This man’s gaze makes that freedom a little less comfortable.
He is beginning to fade into the desert, yet he still looks straight at us. We don’t know what he is thinking, what he is waiting for, or whether he is waiting for anything at all. We can stay, keep looking. We will have to be the ones to look away.
